ABOUT

We are a team of highly experienced and expert oncologists each with over ten years of practice both in the NHS and in the private medical sphere. We offer non-surgical treatment for urological cancers including prostate cancer, bladder cancer and kidney cancer. Our clinics are based at the leading Welsh oncology care provider: Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. We offer the full range of urological cancer treatments including radiotherapy (IMRT, VMAT), prostate brachytherapy, chemotherapy, hormone and immunotherapy.

DR JAKE TANGUAY MB CHB, MRCP, FRCR

Consulant Clinical Oncologist

Dr Tanguay has been a consultant Clinical Oncologist at Velindre Cancer Centre since 2009 with a specialist interest in urological cancers (prostate, bladder and kidney). He has expertise in advanced radiotherapy techniques (including SABR, IMRT, brachytherapy), hormonal treatments, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and chemotherapy. He has a specific interest in individualising treatment to optimise the anticancer effect while seeking to minimise any associated side effects. 

He has been the urological team lead at Velindre Cancer Centre since 2015 where he over sees a team of 30 (oncologists, specialist nurses, radiographers, physicists and pharmacists).  He is also a member of the National Urology Clinical Steering Group.


He is the Associate Medical Director of Clinical Informatics at Velindre and also  national clinical lead for cancer informatics.

He has been  an investigator for a number of major national and international trials including immunotherapy in bladder cancer and prostate cancer, SABR radiotherapy for prostate cancer, DNA target agents in prostate cancer, and the internationally renowned STAMPEDE trial.

He is the Welsh national lead for prostate brachytherapy and recently led on the introduction of high dose rate brachytherapy to Wales.

He grew up in Pembrokeshire and currently lives in the Vale of Glamorgan with his family. When not working he is a keen cyclist and hill walker.

PROF. JOHN STAFFURTH

Consultant Clinical Oncologist

​Professor Staffurth has been a consultant Clinical Oncologist in Cardiff for 15 years treating patients with prostate and bladder cancer, using a combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biological therapies and immunotherapy. He trained and undertook research training in London. He is a national expert in prostate cancer radiotherapy and leads the radiotherapy aspects of several national trials in prostate cancer. He led the introduction of IMRT (Intensity Modulated RadioTherapy) into the UK and is the national lead for the Royal College of Radiologists Continuous Professional Development program for consultants in prostate cancer
radiotherapy. He was promoted to Clinical Professor in 2017 in recognition of his internationally relevant research in both prostate cancer and   radiotherapy. He works in a highly multidisciplinary team across Cardiff with complex oncological cases discussed with colleagues in Velindre Cancer Centre. In the Private sector he works for Lodge Oncology Consulting Limited and sees most of his private patients in Velindre. He has close links with urological surgeons   undertaking private work. His private patients requiring urgent NHS care have excellent continuity of care. He has practicing rights at the Rutherford Cancer Centre, Newport.
In addition to his clinical work he has held numerous national leadership roles in prostate cancer, radiotherapy and research. He leads multiple trials in Velindre, with a rapidly changing portfolio; including leading on trials involving immunotherapy agents and drugs that target abnormal DNA within cancers.
